    1. Christmas for some can be double edged One side showing the joy and the togetherness we feel when we are with our love ones The other a sharp dull pain for those who we have lost or the inability to be with the ones we love.Fairchild again writes the harder side of life and in the time of Christmas while showing us one thing Christmas is know for the most hope.Mary River is spending time with her grandmother in London away from her family this Christmas She tries to make the best of it on her ow [...]

    2. My final read for this year s Multi Blog TBR Challenge is a sweet traditional Regency from Elisabeth Fairchild, whose The Christmas Spirit still ranks as one of my all time favourite Christmassy reads.Originally published in 1999, The Holly and the Ivy brings together a young man who has never enjoyed Christmas and a young woman who loves it, but is finding it a trial this year, being separated from her loving and beloved family and missing them profoundly.Charles Thornton Baxter, Viscount Balfo [...]

    3. This was supposed to be one of my Christmas reads but the library copy came late and, anyway, why not prolong the spirit of the season After somewhat slow start, the story picks up about half of the way and ends on a pretty high note for me with surprisingly in depth characterization of its unusual protagonists The characters a viscount and a farmer s daughter Oh, no, I thought first, what kind of unbelievable writing is this to place them on the same street in London as neighbors But hold on At [...]

    4. It s no secret that I love a good Christmas romance With this month s TBR theme being holiday romance, I just had to go looking for something Christmasy, and preferably historical I found a treat in Elisabeth Fairchild s 1999 trad Regency, The Holly and the Ivy It s not high drama, but rather a sweetly traditional Christmas story The hero irked me at times, but otherwise I loved the book and I d give it a B.The hero, Lord Balfour, is often known as Lord Thorn for his prickly demeanor However, re [...]

    5. THE HOLLY AND THE IVY started slowly and this might put some readers off Lord Balfour meets Mary Rivers and doesn t know what to make of her He is a dry character at best Mediocre in height, nearsighted, and moody, he is someone that is hard to like Mary comes from a large family where helping others is expected Cheerful, she finds something good in everyone Now it is her turn to take care of their grandmother Christmas is coming and, though her family believes Gran is well to do, she is not Mar [...]

    6. One of the best regency romances I have read The author didn t lapse into modern language or use modern terms The story did not seem farfetched as many of this style do when don by writers who don t reaearch the period they are writing about I hope to read other regency books by this author.

    7. Mary is a common girl visiting her aging relative in London over the Christmas season She meets their titled and wealthy neighbor, who is always scowling it s because he can t see he s actually squinting and hates Christmas especially this Christmas, because his right hand man and dearest confidante father figure has died, leaving him to host his own holiday ball his annual attempt to meet all Christmas obligation in one fell swoop Enter Mary, who gets him spectacles, organizes his household sta [...]

    8. Slow start, but got better once the story got going I enjoyed it Fairchild s writing style reminds me of Mary Balogh s I can think of no higher praise I ll be on the lookout for books by this author.

    9. This was one of the books I bought from Julie s sale, and it was ok, but NOT as good as any Georgette Heyer romance Normally, romance books are not my favorite, but I do like GH and her regency novels especially.
